Charters What do you think about charter schools, Nathan? I find the idea that corporate reforms such as for-profit charter schools a little teeny bit counter-intuitive.
I think that in a perfect world, charter schools would not make a huge difference and would function exactly like public schools. However, the world we live in right now has proven time and time again that charter schools do not function more efficiently than public schools, and that they lead to significantly less funding for the public school system as a whole.
Charter school administrations also often engage in selective admission and predatory tactics to appear more efficient than public schools. For example, charter schools are required to accept all students, but get around this by using the lottery system, or by having requirements like attendance and grades that effectively eliminate special needs or English-learning children.
As far as for-profit charter schools go, they have no place calling themselves public schools. The purpose of education is not to make a profit. It is to educate the next generation of great thinkers, and provide our citizens with the tools they need to be informed about issues that affect them.
