My mother and I somewhat disagree about this. She believes - and correctly so - that having the winning ticket consist of two Northeasterners is a recipe for ignoring at least half the country. But as the Democratic Primary comes to a close and Sanders is unwilling to give up on his movement, I believe perhaps the best place for him is in Washington, sitting next to Hillary, advising her on how to win over young voters and please the left wing of the party.
Today, Obama met with Sanders. Immediately afterwards, he endorsed Hillary, and said Sanders and her will continue the fight against Trump together. In my humble opinion, this can only mean one thing: Sanders is on board with being Vice President. Hillary knows she's unpopular with young voters, and in that sense she needs Sanders very much - to keep her grounded and help create a movement which unifies young and old voters together.
Hillary's platform has been working with people of color, and with women. But when it comes to youths, us Clinton supporters on Twitter have all seen the #IWillNeverStandWithHer rants, and the retweets of the infamous video of her different viewpoints being compilated onto a single video. She needs young voters to be excited. The Democratic Party does. She needs young voters to feel like they have a voice, enough so that they continue voting in important battlegrounds where Democrats have a chance at taking back Congress.
Hillary Clinton can lead this country. And she can probably win without Sanders. But with him, she is a much stronger candidate. With him, she proves that she truly is a voice for the Democratic Party and all its viewpoints. I am enthusiastic as ever believing that Sanders has already agreed to be Veep, and I believe together they can tackle climate change, income inequality, and inspire young voters to believe in change.
